Join the Academy Museum as we welcome author Alonso Duralde to sign and discuss his new book Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film 

Film critic and author Alonso Duralde and filmmaker Justin Simien (Haunted Mansion (2023) and Dear White People (2014) will be discussing Duralde’s book Hollywood Pride, which explores the stories and lives of the LGBTQ+ community both in front of and behind the camera. Alonso presents a history spanning the beginnings of cinema through the “pansy craze” of the 1930s, to the New Queer Cinema of the 1990s through today. After the conversation, there will be a book signing of Hollywood Pride

About the Author: 

Alonso Duralde is Chief US Film Critic for The Film Verdict, author of Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas, and coauthor of I’ll Be Home for Christmas Movies. He is the cohost of the Linoleum Knife, Maximum Film!, and Breakfast All Day podcasts, and has discussed film on CNN, PBS, TCM, and ABC, as well as in numerous documentaries. 

Justin Simien, a Los Angeles-based writer, director, and producer, is known for his critically acclaimed work in film and television. His debut feature, Dear White People (2014), won a Sundance Special Jury Award and was adapted into a Netflix series in 2017. His second feature, Bad Hair (2020), premiered at Sundance as well and was acquired by Hulu. In 2023, Disney released his third feature, Haunted Mansion. His latest project, a docu-series entitled Hollywood Black, will be released on August 11 on MGM+. Simien is currently executive producing TV projects through his company, Culture Machine, under an overall deal with Paramount TV.
