Writer-producer-director James Cameron’s epic love story set against the backdrop of the 1912 seagoing disaster was his riskiest and most ambitious project to date. The result broke global box office records, established Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as icons of cinematic romance, and won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Directing. Among the film’s other Oscar winners were visual effects experts Robert Legato, Mark Lasoff, Thomas L. Fisher, and Michael Kanfer; the team’s use of miniatures, full-scale physical effects, and groundbreaking computer animation was a key factor in the film’s remarkably immersive depiction of the “unsinkable” ocean liner and its tragic fate.
