Screenwriter Frank Darabont made his feature directorial debut with this faithful adaptation of the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption about the friendship that develops in a Maine prison between a falsely incarcerated banker (Tim Robbins) and a lifer (Morgan Freeman). In the three decades since its release, the film has become one of the most beloved of its time. Shawshank Redemption received a total of seven nominations, including Best Picture; Best Actor, for Freeman’s moving performance; and Original Score, for Thomas Newman’s emotionally restrained composition. Newman, a 15-time nominee, was also nominated that year for Little Women.
