In her adaptation of Henry James’s 1881 novel, Jane Campion brings her own unique vision to a classic text. Nicole Kidman (who would go on to produce Campion’s In the Cut along with Effie Brown) steps into the role of an heiress who falls prey to the false promises of love. A seemingly lush period piece, Campion’s interpretation interrogates the romance genre in which it operates.
