Sold into marriage, the young and mute Ada (Holly Hunter) is sent to the New Zealand frontier with her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin in her first role). There, she is caught between her distant husband (Sam Neill) and her desire for another frontiersman (Harvey Keitel). The film garnered Campion an Oscar for Original Screenplay as well as acting Oscars for Hunter and Paquin.
