The hobbit Frodo sets off on a dangerous quest across Middle Earth to destroy the powerful One True Ring, helped by an eclectic band of heroes that includes a wizard, an elf, a dwarf, and a royal warrior. Filmmaker Peter Jackson’s three-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy classic was an extraordinarily ambitious undertaking, and this first chapter made use of groundbreaking visual effects techniques. The film received 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won for Cinematography, Makeup, Original Score, and Visual Effects.
