Writer-director Peter Bogdanovich assembled an impeccable cast of veterans and young actors for this authentic and evocatively filmed adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s novel about life in a declining, small Texas town in 1951. Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman won Oscars for their memorable supporting performances, and Jeff Bridges (also nominated), Timothy Bottoms, Cybill Shepherd, and Randy Quaid made strong impressions early in their careers.
