Filmmaker Agnès Varda spent several months traveling through urban and rural France to investigate the variety of people who “glean,” making use of items that others have thrown away. One of Varda’s most popular and acclaimed documentaries, it was her first shot with a digital camera and features the inevitable, irresistible combination of her inquisitive nature and her richly humanist sensibilities. Varda returned to some of her film’s subjects in a follow-up film The Gleaners and I: Two Years Later (2002).
