Writer-director Anthony Minghella (The Talented Mr. Ripley) adapted Michael Ondaatje’s award-winning “unfilmable” 1992 novel into a visually sumptuous romantic drama set against the backdrop of World War II. Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas received Oscar nominations for their lead performances as the adulterous lovers. Juliette Binoche won for her moving supporting performance as a Canadian nurse tending to the wounded Fiennes. The film won eight additional Oscars, including Best Picture and Directing, and casting directors Michelle Guish and David Rubin collaborated with Minghella to gather a remarkable international ensemble, including Willem Dafoe, Colin Firth, Naveen Andrews, and Jürgen Prochnow.
