Three young filmmakers venture into the Black Hills Forest of Maryland to investigate a local legend only to find unimaginable terror. This micro-budget horror film made use of its limited resources to craft a remarkably convincing “found footage” chiller and became a box-office blockbuster, aided by a marketing campaign that cleverly convinced audiences they were seeing real events. The committed, naturalistic performances by leads Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams helped to make this a modern classic which has been often imitated but never equaled.
