Jane Campion’s feature debut, Sweetie, bears the thematic threads that make up the rich tapestry of her body of work: strained familial relationships, sexual tension, and a raw slice of humanity that is both unsettling and life-affirming. Released in 1989, the film centers on a complex relationship between two diametrically opposed sisters (the film is dedicated to Campion’s own).
