Program Series: Summer of Love: 1990s Romances

Strictly Ballroom
Baz Luhrmann’s directorial debut, and first film in the Red Curtain Trilogy, is set in the sequined-filled world of competitive ballroom dancing. Part mockumentary, part drama, all passion, Strictly Ballroom follows dancer Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio), who has trained since a child to win Australia’s top dance competition. Scott, however, can’t dance by the rules, and his desire to compete with his own choreography leads him to pair with the novice but naturally talented Fran (Tara Morice). The strict dance world is against them, but together they challenge all the rules by dancing—and living—with their hearts.

Romeo + Juliet
Baz Luhrmann’s take on Shakespeare’s tragedy is perhaps one of the best-loved adaptations, and is the second installment... in his Red Curtain Trilogy, which closed with Moulin Rouge (2001). Featuring Luhrmann’s distinctive stylized palate coupled with frenetic MTV-style editing and an all-star soundtrack, Romeo + Juliet became an iconic ‘90s classic for its casting: Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes step into the roles of the star-crossed lovers.
