Writer Robert Towne, with producer and co-writer Warren Beatty, was inspired by classic French farces for his original screenplay about a Beverly Hills hairdresser struggling to balance the challenges of his work and an overabundant love life on the eve of the 1968 presidential election. With its top-notch cast (including Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, and Carrie Fisher) and the relaxed yet confident direction of Hal Ashby (Coming Home), the film received Oscar nominations for its art direction (Richard Sylbert and W. Stewart Campbell; set decoration: George Gaines), Jack Warden’s supporting performance, and the Towne-Beatty original screenplay, and won for Lee Grant’s vivid performance as one of Beatty’s clients/lovers.
