World Restoration Premiere

For Sophia Loren’s second project with director Lina Wertmüller, and at least the twentieth with her husband Carlo Ponti as producer, she is cast as an unglamorous matron. In the capable hands of Wertmüller—who by the making of this film was still the only female filmmaker who had been nominated for Directing at the Oscars—Loren stars as Rosa, a mother of seven living in the tumultuous lands near Mount Vesuvius, who uses her cooking mastery to charm her way back into her husband’s affections.

DIRECTED BY: Lina Wertmüller. WRITTEN BY: Raffaele La Capria, Lina Wertmüller. WITH: Sophia Loren, Luca De Filippo, Luciano De Crescenzo, Alessandra Mussolini. 1990. 175 min. Italy. Color. Italian. 4K DCP. Digital restoration by Cinecittà.

Academy Museum film programming generously funded by the Richard Roth Foundation.
