The Academy Museum welcomes author Mimi Haddon to discuss her book Palace Costume: Inside Hollywood’s Best Kept Fashion Secret with the owner of Palace Costume Melody Barnett and costume designers Shirley Kurata (Everything Everywhere All at Once, 2022) and two-time Academy Award–winner Mark Bridges (Phantom Thread, 2017 and The Artist, 2011). They will go behind the scenes into Palace Costume & Prop Co., a Los Angeles film-industry haven of dresses, gowns, garments, accessories, props, and jewelry featured in iconic movies for over 50 years.

Acclaimed designers such as Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther, 2018), Arianne Phillips (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 2019), Shirley Kurata (Everything Everywhere All at Once, 2022), and Mark Bridges (Boogie Nights, 1997) share insightful anecdotes about the importance of Palace Costume as their go-to creative resource, especially for historical period films.
