Added to the National Film Registry in 2023, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s directorial debut feature, Love & Basketball, has become a cult classic over the years since its 2000 release, beloved by many millennials who believe in the power of love and of basketball. Set in South Central Los Angeles, the film tells a love story of two young “ball players,” furnished with sweet tunes by Al Green and Chaka Khan, while paying homage to the renowned history of LA basketball and its dynamic culture—shoutouts to the Lakers, Clippers, and Crenshaw High and USC teams.
