Writer-director Greta Gerwig followed up her critically acclaimed hit Lady Bird (2017) with this thoughtful adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved 1868 novel, starring Best Actress nominee Saoirse Ronan as aspiring writer Jo March, the author’s surrogate. Gerwig’s adaptation made bold structural choices and she supported her star with a top-notch cast including Supporting Actress nominee Florence Pugh as her sister Amy, Laura Dern as their mother, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March. Jacqueline Durran’s evocative period costumes won an Oscar, and the film earned additional nominations for Best Picture, Gerwig’s adapted screenplay, and Alexandre Desplat’s warm score.
