The film version of Avery Corman’s novel about a self-absorbed Manhattanite who has to learn how to be a good father to his young son after his wife leaves him became a surprise box office smash and the winner of five Oscars including Best Picture. Robert Benton (Places in the Heart) won Oscars for his screenplay and directing, leading Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep (as the warring Kramers) to their first Oscars, while Jane Alexander (as a supportive friend) and Justin Henry (making his film debut at age 7 as the couple’s child) received nominations for their naturalistic and moving performances.
