Based on the bestselling thriller by Peter Benchley, Steven Spielberg’s second feature-length film as a director was famously a disaster-plagued production that nevertheless resulted in one of the most effortlessly entertaining and enduringly popular Hollywood films of all time. Police chief Brody (Roy Scheider) is forced to confront the Great White terrorizing his island resort town, calling in wisecracking marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and small-town fisherman Quint (Robert Shaw) to put their lives on the line and help save the residents and tourists of Amity Island. A box-office record-breaker as well as a Best Picture nominee, Jaws earned Oscars for its film editing, sound, and John Williams’s alternately thrilling and chilling score.
