Truman Capote’s groundbreaking “non-fiction novel” told the true story of two small-time criminals whose burglary of a Kansas family’s home went tragically wrong, and Richard Brooks’s chilling film adaptation retold the story with documentary-like realism. Robert Blake and Scott Wilson gave impressively naturalistic performances, and the film earned nominations for Brooks’s direction and adapted screenplay, Conrad Hall’s stark black-and-white cinematography, and the unnerving score by Quincy Jones, which helped reinforce his status as one of the most exciting film composers of his era.

DIRECTED/WRITTEN BY: Richard Brooks. WITH: Robert Blake, Scott Wilson, John Forsythe, Paul Stewart. 1967. 134 min. USA. B&W. Scope. English. Rated R. 4K DCP.
