Director Alfonso Cuarón’s original title for his screenplay (written with son Jonás Cuarón) was Gravity: A Space Adventure in 3D. The resulting film, a mesmerizing and thrilling big-screen experience that makes full use of the audiovisual possibilities of contemporary 3D filmmaking technology, more than lived up to the subtitle. Sandra Bullock was nominated for Best Actress for her role as Dr. Ryan Stone, a novice astronaut fighting for her life after a catastrophic accident in Earth’s orbit. The film won seven Oscars, for its cinematography, directing, sound mixing, film editing, sound editing, original score, and the extraordinary visual effects created by Tim Webber, Chris Lawrence, David Shirk, and Neil Corbould.
