Actor-turned-director Richard Attenborough spent nearly two decades trying to make a film about the life of revered Indian leader Gandhi, and the end result was an unusually thoughtful biographical epic. Stage actor Ben Kingsley (born Krishna Bhanji) had appeared in only one feature film before he was cast by Attenborough; his uncanny performance earned him a Best Actor Oscar and led to a remarkable big-screen career. Gandhi earned 11 nominations and received 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Directing, and Original Screenplay.
