Gallery Spotlight: Inside the Editing Room with Joi McMillon

Join the Academy Museum in conversation with editor Joi McMillon as she discusses the technique and artistry of film editing and revisits her 2018 historic nomination when she became the first African American woman nominated for Best Achievement in Film Editing for Moonlight (2016). The conversation will highlight her work on co-editing the award-winning film Moonlight, among other memorable films.

  • The conversation will take place in the Ted Mann Lobby located on Lower Level 1.

  • Visitors are encouraged to visit the galleries before or after the conversation.

Joi McMillon is an award-winning editor best known for her work on Barry Jenkins’ critically acclaimed film Moonlight, the Best Picture winner at the 89th Academy Awards. McMillon’s work on the feature solidified her place in history as the first black woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Film Editing.

Her latest collaborations include The Underground Railroad, Jenkins’ limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel for Amazon Studios, and Zola, the revolutionary, Twitter-thread-based feature directed by Janicza Bravo.

Her ongoing collaboration with Jenkins continues with Disney’s upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King (2024).

McMillon resides in Los Angeles and serves on the Roybal Film and Television Magnet’s Industry Council.
