Gallery Spotlight: Art and Science Collide

Complimentary with museum general admission, the Gallery Spotlight series is a monthly conversation with featured guests.

Join the Academy Museum in conversation with Assistant Curators Sophia Serrano and Emily Rauber Rodriguez as they discuss the new exhibitions Color in Motion: Chromatic Explorations of Cinema and Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures Through Cinema. The curators will elaborate on the intentions, highlights, and designs of the two exhibitions.

Both exhibitions are among more than 70 exhibitions and programs presented as part of PST ART: Art & Science Collide. The latest edition of this landmark regional event explores the intersections of art and science, both past and present. PST ART is presented by Getty.

ASSISTANT CURATOR BIOS

Sophia Serrano has been part of the Academy Museum team since 2019, curating exhibitions including The Art of Moviemaking: The Godfather, Significant Movies and Moviemakers: Real Women Have Curves, Significant Movies and Moviemakers: Lourdes Portillo, and Identity: Costume Design. Before joining the Academy Museum, Sophia Serrano was a research assistant at the Getty Research Institute and a graduate student at the University of Southern California, where she completed her PhD in Cinema and Media Studies. During her time at the Getty Research Institute, she worked on the Art on Screen initiative, the exhibition The Metropolis in Latin America, 1830–1930, and the publication Video Art in Latin America. She was also a lecturer at Loyola Marymount University, where her courses focused on global cinema. She is returning to the Academy Museum after previously working as a research intern for its PST: LA/LA project From Latin America to Hollywood.

Emily Rauber Rodriguez is an assistant curator at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and has contributed to the exhibitions Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971, John Waters: Pope of Trash, and Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures Through Cinema. She holds doctoral and master’s degrees in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Southern California. Her scholarly work focuses on race and ethnicity in speculative fiction.
