Jewish, German-born producer Carl Laemmle merged his East Coast–based studio with five others to form Universal in 1912. As president of Universal, Laemmle soon converted a 230-acre San Fernando Valley farm into Universal City, California, the world’s largest filmmaking facility. Universal produced foreign-language versions of their films to target non-English speaking markets, using the same original sets and props. George Melford’s 1931 Drácula—in Spanish, starring Carlos Villarías and Lupita Tovar—was shot at night after the English version production team left the set. It had an entirely different cast and crew, and a lower budget.
