Dimensions of Sound in Movies: Foley

Dimensions of Sound in Movies: Foley

Step in to the arts and sounds behind the world of Foley and natural sound design in this workshop for theater-goers ages 15 and up.

When recreating everyday sounds for the screen, the sound designer’s job is to make the soundscape feel so natural that we barely notice. One of the most popular ways to do this is with Foley Art: performing everyday sounds in a recording booth to recreate and match the natural sounds of the actors on screen.

In this workshop, we will consider: why is Foley performance an art form and how is it performed? What sounds are needed to make a scene feel natural? How does a soundscape affect us as audience members?

For this Foley-focused session, we will discuss what Foley art is, why it is considered an art form, and how to listen for natural sound design in cinema. We will work collectively on a film clip to decide what sounds a Foley artist might need to perform—and then we will perform and record them together!
