Calamity Jane

Calamity Jane

Doris Day plays the title role in this boisterous original movie musical very loosely inspired by the real-life 19th century sharpshooter, starring another top musical star of the era, Howard Keel as Wild Bill Hickok. Calamity Jane was one of six films in which Day starred for director David Butler, with veteran choreographer Jack Donohue staging the film’s musical numbers. Modern audiences have embraced Day’s portrayal of Jane as a strong, independent woman and a role model, finding new significance in the film’s Oscar-winning ballad “Secret Love” (music by Sammy Fain, lyrics by Paul Francis Webster).
