John Singleton’s feature filmmaking debut earned the 23-year-old nominations for Directing and Original Screenplay, but the cast of his powerful drama was equally impressive, with Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Morris Chestnut giving memorable performances at the start of their careers as three friends navigating the struggles and dangers of life in South Central Los Angeles, with Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett providing strong support as Gooding’s parents.
