Beloved
Adapted from Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1987 novel, Beloved emits currents of tension from its first frame. Formerly enslaved Sethe, played with incredible pathos by Oprah Winfrey, weighs her newfound freedom against the crippling weight of losing her firstborn daughter and the energy of fending off an angry poltergeist. Sethe and daughter Denver find their life further unsettled by the sudden appearance of a supernatural being, who may be Sethe's firstborn, reincarnated. Beloved's achievements in costume design, acknowledged with a nomination for Colleen Atwood at the 71st Oscars, are beautifully showcased in the film's large crowd scenes.
