In director Denis Villeneuve’s thoughtful science-fiction drama, adapted from Ted Chiang’s award-winning novella Story of Your Life, a linguistics expert (Amy Adams) is recruited by the government when massive alien spaceships suddenly land across the globe. The film’s production designer, Patrice Vermette (nominated with set decorator Paul Hotte), was also responsible for designing the film’s alien language—one of Arrival’s many remarkable and imaginative visuals. The film was nominated in seven categories, including Best Picture and Production Design, and won an Oscar for Sound Editing.
