An Officer and a Gentleman in 35mm

An Officer and a Gentleman in 35mm

Inspired by screenwriter Douglas Day Stewart’s time in the US Navy, this touching drama focuses on an aimless Naval Academy student finding love and self-respect. Acclaimed stage actor Louis Gossett Jr. earned an Oscar for his portrayal of a demanding drill sergeant, a character originally conceived as a white man, and became the first Black actor to win in a supporting role. The film also won an Oscar for the original song “Up Where We Belong” and received nominations for Best Actress, Original Screenplay, Film Editing, and Original Score.
