Jane Campion returns to her native New Zealand for her sophomore film, which is based on the biography of her fellow Kiwi, novelist Janet Frame, who was institutionalized after a misdiagnosis of schizophrenia. Set over three periods in the protagonist’s life—childhood, adolescence, and adulthood—the film, as with many throughout Campion’s career, explores subjects considered taboo, especially for women.
