agnes varda on march 20 the north american 4 k restoration premiere of la paloma 1974 on march 28 sergei parajanov at 100 a program celebrating the work of the filmmaker and poet featuring the color of pomegranates 1969 as well as the restoration world premiere of mikhail vartanovs poetic documentary parajanov the last spring 1992 on april 19 shifting perspectives on los angeles ghetto film school showcasing directors cuts of the ghetto film school films featured in the current exhibition shifting perspectives vertical cinema on may 26 and the 4 k restoration world premiere of amadeus 1984 on may 31 limited film series limited film series kick off on march 22 with the sewing circle sapphic icons of early hollywood while a sewing circle is commonly defined as a social meeting of women who congregate to sew and talk together some women in early hollywood co opted this term to denote sapphic inclinations or women who love women initiated by early silent film producer and actor brando cary elwes actor and one time personal assistant to brando susan mizruchi author of brandos smile his life thought and work 2015 and david page a former costumer of brandos considered one of the great american screen actors of the 20th century brando cut his teeth on the stanislavski system which he learned from beloved new york based acting teacher stella adler his breakthrough performance as stanley kowalski in a streetcar named desire 1951 a role he originated on broadway led to the first of his eight academy award nominations throughout his six decade career taking home psychological impact on audiences on view october 6 2024 july 13 2025 this exhibition highlights the role color has played since the earliest days of film history both as a tool for technological experimentation and artistic expression the exhibition features technologies from technicolor and eastman color objects such as the legendary ruby slippers designed by gilbert adrian from the wizard of oz 1939 the green dress designed by edith head and worn by kim novak in vertigo 1958 a wonka chocolate bar from willy wonka and the chocolate factory 1971 a blue ensemble worn by jaime foxx as django in django unchained 2012 many animations and films and a recreation of the stargate corridor from stanley kubricks 2001 a space odyssey 1968 which will transport visitors into a colorverse development of film colors as these areas offered an accessible entry point for women to work in the film industry as shown through an assortment of photographs and artifacts french film production and distribution company pathe employed hundreds of young women to hand paint films at the turn of the century later transitioning to a more industrialized stenciling process in 1903 with over 200 women in their labor force by 1906 established in 1923 in the united states disneys ink paint department broke ground as the animation industrys first all female division and is represented in the exhibition through photography materials used for inking and painting and animation cel reproductions created by the current disney ink paint department executive head of technicolors art department natalie kalmus nee dunfee was the color consultant of all technicolor films produced from 1934 to 1949 she collaborated with art and wardrobe departments of studios during production of technicolor films to create the best visual palette to highlight technicolors technology kalmus is represented in the exhibition through her book color consciousness 1935 dyes used by technicolor and photographs in monochrome film installation three large scale screens depicting tinted film clips from the silent era will expose visitors to the hallucinatory vibrant and sometimes other worldly quality of monochrome film colors audiences will be absorbed in monochrome hues from the red of nero or the fall of rome 1909 to the yellows of die nibelungen kriemhilds revenge 1924 this gallery showcases new multispectral scans produced with the innovative scan 2 screen workflow of film prints collected by the eye filmmuseum amsterdam lichtspiel kinemathek bern the library of congress washington dc and the bundesarchiv filmarchiv berlin a bespoke score composed by nick sena will enhance and unify the experience contrasting the singular dominant hues of the monochrome film installation the subsequent gallery color as character offers a spectacular assortment of objects that dive into case studies of color use by filmmakers including directors production designers costume designers and cinematographers among others the gallery demonstrates how color can be used to drive a films narrative create meaning determine character traits and moods and establish time and location arranged by the colors of the rainbow visitors will encounter an array of rare props and dazzling costumes such as the legendary ruby slippers designed by gilbert adrian from the wizard of oz 1939 the green dress designed by edith head and worn by kim novak in vertigo 1958 a wonka chocolate bar from willy wonka and the chocolate factory 1971 the yellow gown worn by cate blanchett in elizabeth the golden age 2007 designed by alexandra byrne a model of the yellow house from up 2009 a blue ensemble worn by jaime foxx as django in django unchained 2012 designed by sharen davis and the green gown worn by adele haenel as heloise in portrait of a lady on fire 2019 designed by dorothee guiraud the experimentation gallery is divided into two sections with a black box space featuring a single screen projection showing mary ellen butes color rhapsody oskar fischingers kreise and len lyes rainbow dance on one side and a gallery comprising concept art animation drawings and other experimental ephemera by these and other film artists color in motion concludes with a high energy participatory color arcade which is set in a futuristic design inspired by neon cinema the color arcade offers an opportunity for visitors to physically interact with color through the movement of their bodies allowing them to see create and experience color in motion the exhibition experience concludes with a nod to the stargate corridor from stanley kubricks 2001 a space odyssey 1968 transporting visitors into a colorverse the exhibition is accompanied by a 272 page catalogue presenting insightful analysis engaging case studies and inspiring conversations with scholars and experts in the field edited with texts by exhibition curators jessica niebel and sophia serrano it also includes museums double height hurd gallery the exhibition is accessible on two levels on the first level visitors will be introduced to cyberpunk and its legacy through film posters and early literary sources they will move into an immersive media installation at the center of the exhibition where a band of moving images surrounds the gallery space depicting wastelands derelict urban settings and digital landscapes from cyberpunk and futurist films the centerpiece montage is shaped by a script penned by writer director and mac arthur fellow alex rivera illustrating the genres 20th century origins and its 21st century expansions into afrofuturist indigenous futurist and latinx futurist films on the galleries second level visitors will be able to go behind the scenes to see how filmmakers create cyberpunk worlds with costumes props concept art and production materials in the museums lobby visitors will be invited to engage in an immersive mixed reality experience using mr headsets visitors will explore a three to five minute educational narrative on virtual production techniques in film and gain insight into the creative development process the experience focuses on cyberpunk aesthetics and provides a glimpse into the process of creating a blade runner inspired dystopian environment cyberpunk features 24 original objects including costumes props production art books and magazines as well as 18 poster reproductions from iconic cyberpunk films such as blade runner 1982 ghost in the shell 1995 the matrix 1999 and newer films such as alita battle angel 2019 and neptune frost 2021 highlights from the academys collections include a costume from tron 1982 designed by elois jenssen and rosanna norton that has never been publicly exhibited and was conserved especially for this presentation the vid phon telecommunication device in its original booth and concept design drawings by visual futurist syd mead from blade runner 1982 a matte painting from the running man 1987 concept art from terminator 2 judgment day 1991 and a prop silicone head and chrome skull from ex machina 2015 in addition the exhibition will feature loans of a range of prop devices built to connect cinematic protagonists to virtual worlds including the accumicon spectacular optometry international helmet from videodrome 1983 and the s q u i d superconducting quantum interference device headset and player from strange days 1995 it will also include the respirator headset and node gun from sleep dealer 2008 and the drone from night raiders 2021 both of which will be exhibited for the first time books and magazines related to the development of the cyberpunk literary genre will also be on view the exhibition is accompanied by a 192 page catalogue featuring rarely seen behind the scenes to name bill kramer current director and president of the academy museum of motion pictures as its new ceo following the departure of dawn hudson after 11 years of esteemed service kramer will lead the global membership the oscars the institutions education and emerging talent initiatives the academys extensive collections housed in the margaret herrick library and academy film archive and the academy museum and its ongoing calendar of exhibitions screenings educational and public programs and retail operations in his current role kramer was responsible for successfully opening the academy museum in september 2021 the museum has sold more than 550 000 tickets in its first nine months in operation under kramers direction the museum successfully developed five floors of world class exhibitions devoted to the arts and sciences of moviemaking and formalized channels between academy members and the museum for overall content creation in addition kramer and his museum team developed the academys first permanent retail store both in the museum and online generating sales of more than 5 5 mm to date under kramers leadership the museum created the academys first global publications imprint that launched with a hayao miyazaki catalog which is currently in its fourth print run and with a spike lee book to be issued this month kramer and the museums programming team developed the academys first robust public screenings series with more than 40 programs presented each month including branch selects a screening series co created with the academys 17 member branches to ensure the who is involved in philanthropic efforts connecting health human rights education and the arts julia s gouw the chairwoman of piermont bank philanthropist arts patron and prominent proponent for advancing aapi representation in entertainment shira ruderman executive director of the ruderman family foundation whose philanthropic efforts have helped to improve the portrayal of disabilities in entertainment and increase the number of roles that cast actors with disabilities in addition to her philanthropy focused on the american jewish community these three new trustees bring diverse height of the civil rights movement regeneration features rarely seen excerpts of films restored by the academy film archive as well as other narrative films and documentaries newsreels and home movies photographs scripts drawings costumes equipment posters and historical materials such as entrance tickets note cards and telegrams along with augmented reality experiences ar designed specifically for the exhibition the second major temporary exhibition to be organized by the academy museum regeneration will remain on view in the marilyn and jeffrey katzenberg gallery through april 9 2023 regeneration is co curated by doris berger vice president of curatorial affairs at the academy museum and rhea combs director of curatorial affairs at the smithsonians national portrait gallery with the academy museums j raul guzman assistant curator as well as manouchka kelly labouba and emily rauber rodriguez research assistants co curators berger and combs said it has been a great honor for us to curate regeneration a project that challenged us to do justice to the lives and work of nearly a century of black filmmakers and the audiences they served the legacies explored in these galleries were important in their own time though too often neglected and marginalized and remain vital today we hope to heighten awareness of these films and film artists and encourage an appreciation of the many many contributions that black americans have made to cinema this landmark exhibition seeks to restore lost chapters of american film history as it elevates the contributions of black artists to present a more inclusive story said jacqueline stewart who served on the exhibitions advisory panel before becoming chief artistic and programming officer of the academy museum of motion pictures we are incredibly proud to present regeneration an exhibition that demonstrates how the academy museum introduces new scholarship offers a more expansive vision of american film history and encourages public dialogue about the past and present of film as an art form and a social force regeneration comprises seven galleries dedicated to exploring the social and political situation of black americans at the dawn of cinema in the united states the representation of black people in early cinema from 1897 to 1915 pioneering independent black filmmakers such as oscar micheaux and race films made for black audiences from the 1910 s to the 1940 s black music in american film including soundies and black musicals black stars and film icons cinematic stories reflecting the freedom movements and the daring and pioneering paths black film directors blazed during the civil rights movement highlighted objects on view include never before shown costume drawings from carmen jones 1954 promotional glamour portraits of dozens of leading black film stars costumes worn by lena horne in stormy weather 1943 and sammy davis jr in porgy and bess 1959 cowboy boots worn by herb jeffries in harlem on the prairie 1937 a 1920 s camera from the norman film company a producer of race films a mills panoram machine from the 1940 s tap dance shoes from the nicholas brothers and one of louis armstrongs trumpets the exhibition opens with two versions of a clip from something good negro kiss 1898 showcasing vaudeville performers saint suttle 1870 1932 and gertie brown 1882 1934 in what appears to be one of the earliest examples of on screen affection by black actors unknown prior to 2016 when it was discovered in the united states another version of the clip was recently found in norway and will also be presented this silent work counters the popular stereotypical and racist caricatures of black performance at the time the next gallery highlights race films which were independently made productions with all black casts created between 1916 and the 1940 s these films often offered more nuanced stories and roles for black actors than mainstream studio productions a wall featuring vibrant movie posters demonstrates the scale and range of genres of these films and spotlights companies and filmmakers in different geographic regions of the us this section is amplified by materials on segregated movie theaters alongside an interactive us map highlighting the volume of race film productions and a curated selection of existing race film clips shown in a specially designed in gallery theater the exhibition goes on to explore the opportunities and complexities that arose when hollywood began to include more depictions of black actors specifically in films featuring music as demonstrated by early sound films soundies the three minute precursor to the music video and hollywoods all black cast musicals this gallery also looks beyond the united states and highlights the career of josephine baker in france the stars and icons gallery recognizes numerous black performers in hollywood from the 1920 s through the late 1950 s many of whom achieved mainstream notoriety although a significant number did not a large scale installation of more than fifty glamour photographs features top billed stars and previously uncredited artists as a way of showcasing their lasting influence on american cinema this installation is in dialogue with home movies that feature private images of stars like the nicholas brothers cab calloway and josephine baker a large scale film montage features striking musical numbers with black performers together with some never seen before costumes a spotlight on hattie mc daniels oscar win and complicated fame is also presented in this gallery the exhibition culminates with a section devoted to freedom movements demonstrating how advances in the black freedom struggle impacted the film industry a section on world war ii showing propaganda films and newsreels offers insight into that critical era of the civil rights movement a parallel projection highlights clips from documentaries and feature films side by side demonstrating the relationship between films and the sociopolitical struggles of the era an assortment of photographs drawings posters and magazines highlights how actors such as harry belafonte ruby dee ossie davis sidney poitier and paul robeson as well as writers lorraine hansberry and james baldwin who used their platforms to fight for social and racial justice regenerations final gallery pays tribute to five black directors active from the 1960 s onward madeline anderson robert l goodwin william greaves gordon parks and melvin van peebles and shows how their unique perspectives allowed them to create documentaries independent films and hollywood productions that have helped pave the way for current and future filmmakers of color throughout the exhibition to address the continuing impact of the legacy of black filmmaking and its interplay with other traditions in visual art the exhibition also includes works by contemporary artists including theaster gates some remember sock hops others remember riots 2020 glenn ligon double america 2 2014 gary simmons balcony seating only 2017 and kara walker the end of uncle tom and the grand allegorical tableau of eva in heaven 1995 regeneration received the 2018 sothebys prize for curatorial excellence and for facilitating an exhibition that explores overlooked or underrepresented areas of art history regeneration was also recognized with major grants from the national endowment for the humanities the national endowment for the arts and the los angeles county board of supervisors through the los angeles county department of arts and culture throughout the development of the exhibition co curators doris berger and rhea combs collaborated with an advisory group of distinguished scholars curators and filmmakers including charles burnett filmmaker academy governor ava du vernay filmmaker academy member michael boyce gillespie associate professor the city college of new york department of media and communication arts shola lynch curator new york public library schomburg center for research in black culture filmmaker academy member ron magliozzi curator of film the museum of modern art ellen c scott associate professor and head of cinema and media studies ucla school of theater film and television and jacqueline stewart a comprehensive illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition co published by the academy museum and del monico books will function as an essential reader on black visual culture and filmmaking the catalogue will include a foreword by whoopi goldberg original essays from the co curators as well as donald bogle cara caddoo terri simone francis michael boyce gillespie shola lynch ron magliozzi ellen c scott and jacqueline stewart new interviews with award winning contemporary filmmakers charles burnett julie dash ava du vernay barry jenkins and dawn porter and a filmography and chronology of significant socio political moments by j raul guzman the exhibition will also have a dedicated website featuring additional information and resources to enhance the visitor experience regeneration will be accompanied by a range of film series and screenings including world premieres of films newly restored by the academy film archive including a title once thought lost and a series guest programmed by black film archive creator and curator maya cade presented in conjunction with regeneration is isaac juliens baltimore a three channel installation that will be located in the academy museums warner brothers gallery juliens film is an homage to writer director producer and actor melvin van peebles 1932 2021 whose 1971 film sweet sweetbacks baadasssss song ushered in the blaxploitation era a genre of low budget films created for african american audiences during the 1970 s artist isaac julien appropriates the look and feel of blaxploitation films using baltimores streets and museums as locations julian created this piece while filming baadasssss cinema 2002 a documentary on blaxploitation julien is a world renowned british installation artist filmmaker and distinguished professor of the arts at the university of california santa cruz

depth through works such as handwritten scripts costumes props posters correspondence scrapbooks photographs and film clips at the center of the exhibition is an experiential gallery highlighting the recurrence of music and dance throughout waterss films the exhibition concludes with a gallery dedicated to waterss cult status featuring fan art and other nods to the filmmakers career director and closing date of july 16 2023 the museum will present regeneration remixed the limited series takes another look at the period covered in the exhibition this time through a contemporary lens it serves materials went beyond full face masks to employ multiple overlapping foam latex pieces allowing actors a fuller range of facial expressions and resulting in massive shifts in the field the screening the academy museum welcomes sacheen littlefeather for an evening of conversation healing and celebration on september 17 programs los angeles august 15 2022 the academy museum of motion pictures announced today an evening with sacheen littlefeather a very special program of conversation reflection healing and celebration with sacheen littlefeather apache yaqui az on september 17 2022 in 1973 sacheen littlefeather a member of the screen actors guild became the first native woman to stand onstage at the academy awards ceremony on behalf of marlon brando at his request littlefeather did not accept brandos best actor award for the godfather and gave a passionate 60 second speech regarding the stereotypes of native americans in the entertainment industry she also brought attention to the 1973 wounded knee protest in south dakota this moment resulted in her being professionally boycotted personally attacked and harassed and discriminated against for the last 50 years littlefeathers speech is highlighted in the museums academy awards history gallery and she was interviewed this spring by jacqueline stewart director and president of the academy museum for the academy museum podcast episode marlon brando cannot accept this very generous award about the 1973 oscars the academys a frame article and a visual history as part of the academys oral history projects to be released in september 2022 in june littlefeather was presented with a statement of apology signed by former academy president david rubin the apology is available in full below regarding the academys apology to me we indians are very patient people its only been 50 years we need to keep our sense of humor about this at all times its our method of survival said littlefeather i never thought id live academy museum of motion pictures announces film and public programming through january 2022 over 100 screenings and programs spotlight the work of academy branches and filmmaking crafts films from the golden age of mexican cinema austrian emigres who shaped hollywood contemporary afghan cinema academy governors awards honorees family matinees oscar winning and nominated films and much more special guests include chloe zhao and tommie smith programs los angeles ca november 8 2021 the academy museum of motion pictures announces a robust calendar of more than 100 film screenings and public programs through january 2022 that will take place in the museums david geffen theater ted mann theater and educational spaces we have been thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive response to our inaugural programs we feel the excitement growing among film lovers to experience the academy museum as a new destination to watch films and learn more about their creation and their impact said jacqueline stewart chief artistic and programming officer at the academy museum of motion pictures today we are excited to share additional details of our programs highlighting the dynamic range of artists that have shaped cinema the museums programming teams have worked to develop a robust and dynamic schedule of screenings and discussions that inspire our visitors to dive deeper into our exhibitions while the schedule certainly offers something for everyone we also encourage visitors to allow themselves to be introduced to new directors and artists genres and topics said bernardo rondeau senior director of film programs new ongoing series and programs the art and science of cinema featuring mary sweeny jonas kaplan and chloe zhao join academy award winning director chloe zhao in conversation with bafta winning editor mary sweeny and neuroscientist jonas kaplan as they explore the shared motivations and creative process of artists and scientists the evening will be a conversation about filmmaking skills particularly editing about zhaos inventive blend of documentary and narrative forms about dreams and storytelling and about the parallel inquiry that filmmakers and neuroscientists undertake into the nature of perception and reality november 20 available space which will showcase experimental and independent film and media including artist retrospectives historical and contemporary films expanded cinema performance special guest events and restorations from international archives as well as our own academy film archive branch selects which will screen 52 titles over the span of 2022 curated by members of the 17 branches of the academy of motion picture arts and sciences the series offers a unique chronology from silent cinema to contemporary films that celebrate the achievements of each branchs craft special series and programs vienna in hollywood emigres and exiles in the studio system this series is presented in conjunction with the symposium vienna in hollywood the influence and impact of austrians on the hollywood film industry 1920 s 2020 s co organized by the academy museum the university of southern california usc and the austrian consulate general in los angeles from december 10 and 11 this film series explores the impact of austrian emigres in the classical era of hollywood december 11 january 31 2022 roberto gavaldon the work of mexican director roberto gavaldon spans the cultural divide at the center of mexican national cinema embracing both rural sagas of peasant life the genre made internationally famous by gavaldons contemporary emilio fernandez and urban dramas centered on moneyed professionals as in the cosmopolitan work of julio bracho this program explores gavaldons which is only now being with is a series that offers audiences the chance to dive deep into the work of a filmmaker actor or key creative over the course of one weekend the three day series on the award winning afghan filmmaker shahrbanoo sadat begins on january 29 2022 ongoing series and programs hayao miyazaki in conjunction with the academy museums landmark exhibition hayao miyazaki the museum presents an ongoing retrospective of the academy award winning filmmakers feature work continues through january 1 satyajit ray 1955 1968 the academy museum continues its centennial celebration of writer director and composer satyajit ray 1921 1992 decembers screenings focus on rays prolific and prodigious 1960 s output and showcase prints restored by the academy film archive part 2 of this series will take place in 2022 december 2 22 sound off a celebration of women composers this wide ranging series began in november and concludes with two documentaries a sci fi classic and a modern coming of age story this series is presented in conjunction with the academy museums composer gallery curated in collaboration with oscar winner hildur gudnadottir december 3 14 stories of cinema featuring screenings of films highlighted in the museums core exhibition including chasing coral usa 2017 fantastic mr fox usa 2009 and the age of innocence usa 1993 oscar sundays held every sunday evening in the david geffen theater this series celebrates films that have been honored at the academy awards for the months of december and january we are exploring films with the theme of homecoming which will include titles such as its a wonderful life usa 1946 the awful truth usa 1937 and rebecca usa 1940 family matinees held every saturday for families of all ages screenings will include little women usa 1994 elf usa 2003 and lassie come home usa 1943 future film programs launching in early 2022 include screenings of the works of guest artists spike lee and pedro almodovar in addition education and family 70th anniversary of george stevenss classic western shane 1953 the stevens lecture series was established in 1982 in honor of the legendary director to provide a forum in which eminent ﬁlmmakers and scholars can address the art and craft of motion picture direction previous participants include robert benton james mangold gregory nava sidney poitier steven spielberg and robin swicord christopher nolan who counts shane among the ﬁlms that have most inﬂuenced him will speak about the ﬁlm before the screening in the museums david geffen theater shane features alan ladd as a lone rider who person conversations with him in the span of three decades song kang ho has cultivated unprecedented trajectories in his practice illuminating new possibilities of cinema as an art form and beyond while contributing to the expansion of korean cinema since his debut in the mid 1990 s the academy museum is honored to celebrate songs dynamic career and his genuine love for cinema this december and january the museum will present works of enduring importance 35 years of the national film registry established in 1988 the national film registry is a growing list of films deemed culturally historically or aesthetically significant by the librarian of congress filmmakers archives studios and the public make recommendations and each december another 25 films are added to the registry highlighting the importance of their preservation for generations to come each year this highly anticipated announcement has massive implications not just for film workers and cinephiles around the country but also for the ongoing conservation and legacy of our national film heritage as of december 14 2022 the registry includes 850 films over 500 of which are represented within the collection of the academy film archive this limited series showcases the breadth depth and diversity of the registry across its 35 year history the series begins on december 14 with zoot suit 1981 in 70 mm during the week between christmas eve and new years eve the academy museum invites audiences to experience our state of the art dolby 3 d projection systems with classic and contemporary films shot in and or foundations program in public understanding of science and technology following a summer of record breaking heatwaves extreme wildfires historic floods and a truly unprecedented hurriquake we find the perilous realities of climate change increasingly impacting our daily lives naturally we see our fears reflected in cinema especially in the case of the so called disaster film this screening series to five black directors active from the 1960 s onward melvin van peebles gordon parks william greaves madeline anderson and robert l goodwin the exhibition opens with two versions of a clip from something good negro kiss 1898 showcasing vaudeville performers saint suttle 1870 1932 and gertie brown 1882 1934 in what appears to be one of the earliest examples of an on screen performance of affection by black actors this silent work counters the popular stereotypical and racist caricatures of black performance at the time additional highlights on view include never before shown costume drawings from carmen jones 1954 glamour portraits of leading black film stars costumes worn by lena horne in stormy weather 1943 and sammy davis jr in porgy and bess 1959 a 1920 s camera from the norman film company a producer of race films a 1940 s mills panoram machine on which visitors to the exhibition can watch soundies and one of louis armstrongs trumpets throughout the exhibition to address the continuing impact of the legacy of black filmmaking and its interplay with other traditions in visual art the exhibition also includes works by contemporary artists including theaster on august 25 with the world premiere of a new restoration by the academy film archive of the lost film reform school 1939 starring louise beavers this series runs until september 29 and will feature more than twenty screenings covering the same 70 year span as the exhibition from cinemas infancy in the 1890 s to the early 1970 s the film series ranges from showcasing silent era pioneers such as explores the large community of predominately jewish austrian born film artists and professionals who helped shape the films and industry of classical era hollywood this series is presented in collaboration with the university of southern california usc libraries and the usc max kade institute with support from the austrian consulate general in los angeles in the early 20th century the nascent film industry in hollywood was largely built by jewish immigrants from eastern and central europe including many austrians from regions of the former austro hungarian empire in the 1920 s austrian artists including actor director erich von stroheim and composer max steiner came to the us seeking better opportunities in the american film industry a much larger wave of mostly jewish emigres arrived in hollywood in the 1930 s and 1940 s largely due to nazi persecution in germany and the anschluss in austria these austrian emigres included directors billy wilder fritz lang fred zinnemann and otto preminger actors hedy lamarr peter lorre and paul henreid producers eric pleskow and sam spiegel screenwriters vicki baum gina kaus and salka viertel as well as composers erich wolfgang korngold and ernest gold these artists along with many other emigres who worked as writers composers actors producers cinematographers talent agents costume designers and production designers had a profound impact on hollywood the academy museums six week vienna in hollywood series presents and contextualizes the work of these groundbreaking artists bill kramer director and president of regeneration black cinema 1898 1971 in august the academy museum will open regeneration black cinema 1898 1971 a research driven in depth look at black participation in american filmmaking it will highlight the work of independent black filmmakers from the dawn of cinema to the civil rights movement the exhibition will elevate this underrepresented aspect of artistic production and present a more inclusive story about film history featured artists include lena horne sidney poitier paul robeson william greaves josephine baker the nicholas brothers harry belafonte ruby dee and ossie davis academy museum the exhibition will focus on the predominantly jewish founders of the early hollywood studio system delving into how their personal narratives shaped the distinct characteristics of the movies their respective studios produced it will foreground the ways in which the birth of the american film industry and therefore the projected depiction of the american dream is truly an immigrant story in addition to highlighting the origins of the studios commonly known as the majors the exhibition will also explore the independent producers working in hollywood in the early 1900 s among these studios and producers there are high stakes stories of ingenuity that will engage visitors and offer a deeper understanding of hollywood history the exhibition is curated by associate curator academy museum of motion pictures appoints jacqueline stewart as director and president institutional announcements staff and governance los angeles july 6 2022 the board of trustees of the academy museum of motion pictures today announced the appointment of jacqueline stewart as the institutions director and president one of the worlds leading scholars curators and public educators on cinema she was appointed in 2020 as chief artistic and programming officer of the museum she assumes her duties as director and president on july 18 and will guide the vision of the academy museum and oversee all aspects of its operations she succeeds bill kramer who was appointed ceo of the academy of motion picture arts and sciences last week ted sarandos chair of the academy museums board of trustees and co ceo of netflix said the board warmly and unanimously agrees that jacqueline stewart is the ideal choice to lead the academy museum into the future a strong and inspiring partner to bill kramer throughout the period leading up to our opening she gave indispensable direction to the curatorial program that has been so widely admired her assumption of the role of director and president is a testament to both the intellectual heft of the academy museum and its institutional strength bill kramer said it has been a great privilege to work hand in hand with jacqueline as we opened the academy museum i am thrilled that we will continue to collaborate in our two new roles i know the museum will thrive thanks to her rare combination of expertise creativity and proven leadership like movie fans everywhere i am so thankful to have her guide the future of the academy museum jacqueline stewart said our ambition in opening the academy museum was to give los angeles and the world an unprecedented institution for understanding and appreciating the history and culture of cinema in all its artistic glory and all its power to influence and reflect society i feel deeply honored to have been chosen for this new role and look forward to working with our board of trustees our coo and general counsel brendan connell jr our wonderfully talented staff and with bill kramer and the academy as we continue to advance our mission as chief artistic and programming officer stewart has led strategy and planning for the academy museums curatorial educational and public programming initiatives including exhibitions screenings symposia publications workshops youth programs and the academy museum podcast honored in 2021 as a mac arthur foundation fellow she was a 2019 senior fellow at the smithsonian institutions national museum of african american history and culture nmaahc and was inducted into the american academy of arts and sciences in 2018 she holds an appointment as professor of cinema and media studies at the university of chicago and previously served on the faculty of northwestern university stewarts work in expanding public understanding of cinema and bringing film history to life has included her award winning book migrating to the movies cinema and black urban modernity a study of african americans and silent cinema and her co editorship of l a rebellion creating a new black cinema and william greaves filmmaking as mission she is host of silent sunday nights on turner classic movies and co curated the video collection pioneers of african american cinema for kino lorber a native of chicagos south side stewart founded the south side home movie project in 2005 to preserve digitize and screen amateur footage documenting everyday life from the perspectives of south side residents a passionate film archivist and advocate for film preservation she is chair of the national film preservation board where she led the drafting of reports on diversity equity and inclusion on the national film registry and in the film archival profession and has also served on the boards of chicago film archives the society for cinema and media studies and the association of moving image archivists stewarts research has been supported by institutions including the schomburg center for research in black culture of the new york public library the shelby cullom davis center for historical studies at princeton university the kluge center at the library of congress the franke institute for the humanities at the university of chicago and the national endowment for the humanities stewart earned her ba in english from stanford university and her ph d in english from the university of chicago she studied moving image archiving at ucla and the cineteca di bologna in italy image ye rin mok

queen and academy award winning actor tilda swinton the evening is being co chaired by academy award winning actor and academy museum supporter halle berry academy museum trustee and producer jason
