To Celebrate and Preserve Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander Filmmaking

To honor the first Asian American President of the Academy, the Academy has created the Janet Yang Endowment. This endowment celebrates the legacy, impact, and contributions of Asian and AAPI filmmakers, in perpetuity.

This endowment supports Asian and AAPI programming and exhibitions at the Academy Museum, as well as the acquisition and preservation of Asian and AAPI-focused items in the Academy Collection. The endowment celebrates the indelible legacy of Janet Yang, who has helped pave the way for greater Asian and AAPI representation in entertainment

Celebrating Asian and AAPI Filmmakers at the Academy Museum

The Academy Museum celebrates Asian and AAPI filmmakers and cinema through a variety of exhibitions, film programs, and community partnerships. Artists featured in exhibitions include costume designer Eiko Ishioka, filmmaker Jessica Yu, actor and filmmaker Bruce Lee, and animator Hayao Miyazaki who was celebrated with a career retrospective.

Year-round film programming features screenings from notable Asian and AAPI artists, often with special in-person appearances, including films by and featuring Gregg Araki, Yasujirō Ozu, Satyajit Ray, Yim Soon-rye, Arthur Dong, Sammo Hung, Song Kang-ho, Joan Chen ,Lisa Lu, Youn Yuh-jung, and S.S. Rajamouli.

Academy Collection

The Academy Collection is the largest film related collection in the world. With more than 52 million items, it tells the story of our global film history. The Janet Yang Endowment will help support the representation of Asian and AAPI films and filmmakers in the Academy Collection
